Roman Mosaics & Siracusa

Day 6: Roman Mosaics and Siracusa

Have I mentioned I like mosaics?  It's a hobby I developed a number of years ago when I was working as an engineering consultant at eBay.  I worked at designing and optimizing various art, craft and collectible categories, and one of them was mosaics.  By working with the eBay mosaics community, I developed knowledge, an interest and then a love for the arrangement of tiny tesserae.  I've marveled at the mosaics of St. Peter's in Rome, gazed at the golden glitter of St. Mark's in Venice, was in awe of the Byzantine mosaics earlier in the trip in Palermo and Monreale.  Then we got to the Villa Romana del Casale, and my brain exploded. (Another wow moment!)

Day 7: Siracusa's Island of Ortigia

We were blessed with a brilliantly sunny day in Ortigia.  Alfio surprised us with a morning boat ride around the island, which was delightful!  The captain of the boat surprised us with shots of limoncello.  A post-breakfast palette refresher?  Why not?  Ortigia is perfectly positioned for sunsets.  As we sauntered to a good viewing spot late in the afternoon, I felt surely the island must tip into the sea, for the entire populace was there as kindred spirits watching the sun go down.
